Out of State Residents Charged with Crimes in Maine

Federal crimes
do not involve extradition issues when the defendant is in the United States.  Significant issues arise when one first learns they are a target of a federal criminal investigation.  Do not speak to government investigators or anyone other than an attorney.  Hire an attorney immediately in the district where the crime is alleged to have occurred.

State crimes involve more complicated issues of extradition.  An attorney's early intervention at times can avoid extradition, although the uniform extradition statute in force in most states is designed to easily facilitate extradition.

State probation violations unfortunately are subject to a uniform extradition statute that is basically automatic.  Hire an attorney in the state of the court that imposed the probation sentence.

License issues can arise due to unresolved criminal matters from years or even decades past.  You may have honestly forgotten about prior charges.  However, states with powerful databases will flag your license for past offenses.  Often, these old cases can be resolved without leaving your home state.  Hire an attorney in the state where the unresolved criminal matter is pending.
